Foodie Finds: 4Points BBQ

I love the discovery of independent eateries where food is cooked on-site at the hands of persons skilled in their craft. And where a love for good food is evident in everything from the exuberant service to the flavorful fare offered.  4Points BBQ & Blues House in Winterport, Maine is one of these finds.


Pulled Pork
We arrived late morning just before the lunch crowd descended.  Our visit began with a plate of "burnt ends" offered by the chef as he trimmed the meat for our order.  We could have eaten these flavorful melt-in-your-mouth morsels and left contented.  But there was much more to come.


Beef Brisket
We ordered jr. pulled pork and jr. beef brisket sandwiches which arrived in generous portions.  They are served sans sauce so you have the opportunity to try each sauce and discover your favorite(s).  Typically four are offered but on this visit they were out of one.  Available were "Texas" style BBQ sauce which is slightly sweet and citrusy, "Carolina" a vinegar based sauce with a soft mustard tang and "Kansas City", 4Points' take on the classic, sweet, molasses-based sauce.  All were quite good (even combined) with a freshness that complemented the perfectly cooked meats.  My personal favorite was the Carolina sauce.  It had a balance and complexity that I've not tasted in sauces of this type, which tend to be singularly focused.


The sides on the menu included potato salad, coleslaw and baked beans.  Each was delicious.  The potato salad was savory with chopped hard boiled eggs and a hint of onion.  The potatoes were cooked perfectly to be tender but not mushy.  The coleslaw was crunchy and creamy with a touch of sweetness and a smattering of celery seed.  The baked beans were rich and saucy, well seasoned with both sweet and savory elements.

A positive experience goes beyond the food to include the staff, all whom were friendly and interacted with the customers.  Our waitress was very personable and attentive.  She checked with us several times to see that we had everything we needed and made sure we were all-set to take our leftovers home when we were finished.  The chef came by the table to see how we liked everything and introduced the sous chef/pitmaster as well.  The food was very reasonably priced and served in generous portions.  4Points is sure to be one of our regular go-to places in Maine.
